YOUTH BASKETBALL PROGRAM

YOUTH BASKETBALL PROGRAM

Each winter, the Hemlock High School girls’ basketball program runs the girls' Grades 3-6 portion of the Hemlock Sports Boosters' Saturday morning basketball program. The purpose of the program is to expose the girls to the game of basketball by giving them an opportunity to learn and improve their knowledge of the game along with developing their basketball skills.

Our primary objective is to teach the fundamentals of the game and then have all of the girls play an equal number of minutes during each week’s game. While playing to win and be successful is important, at this stage in a player’s development, we believe that winning is secondary to learning the game of basketball. The first half of each session will be devoted simply to skill development where the coaches and players of the Hemlock High School girls’ basketball program will teach the girls the fundamentals of the game. The second half of each session will be a scheduled game against another team where the emphasis will be on reinforcing the fundamentals of the game as well as teaching the girls to compete while following the rules of the game. There will be no organized weekday practices. Rather, the girls are encouraged to work on the drills that are taught to them each Saturday over the course of the following week.

We want the players to understand that basketball is a team sport. To that end, and to have the girls learn all phases of the game correctly. Violations will be called if the following occur during games: traveling, double dribbling, and dribbling too much when a pass should have been made (5-second closely guarded violations). The players will play man-to-man defense, and the players will be given match-ups at the beginning of each quarter of play.

The most important asset a young athlete can have is her parents. Don’t judge or criticize your child. They need your interest and encouragement but don’t be overbearing. It’s a fine line to walk, but one that is necessary to toe if you want your child to have enthusiasm for the game and be successful at it. Give constructive criticism, but be encouraging and positive with your child as well. We certainly encourage parents’ assistance during the week by helping your daughter practice the skills that they have learned each week. If your daughter’s goal is to play varsity basketball, she must practice year-round, and your guidance as parents can be invaluable to your child.

As a final note, unless the weather is extremely bad, Saturday morning games will be played even if there is no school on the Friday prior to our scheduled Saturday games. If the Saturday morning basketball program must be canceled due to inclement weather, notices will be posted on the Hemlock Girls' Basketball Facebook and Twitter pages, so be sure to check them for up-to-date information.
